Bill Tracker Overview

In the last few years, Wisconsin has seen a record number of bills that attack LGBTQ+ rights, especially transgender youth. Fair Wisconsin has been on the frontlines, monitoring, tracking, and defending against these attacks.

While more states every year work to pass laws to protect LGBTQ people, the Wisconsin Legislature has continued to advance bills that target transgender people, limit local protections, and allow the use of religion to discriminate. Fair Wisconsin and LGBTQ+ leaders  will not stop speaking out against these cruel attacks. LGBTQ people have a right to live in safety, to thrive, and to be treated with dignity.

How Fair Wisconsin Tracks LGBTQ+ & anti-LGBTQ+ Legislation

Our team works with pro-LGBTQ+ legislators, advocates, and staff to monitor our state legislature for bills targeting the rights of LGBTQ people. Each bill is reviewed and analyzed by Fair Wisconsin staff and then updated to this page.

This tracker only monitors legislation in the Wisconsin State Legislature. It does not reflect bills introduced at the federal level or in local municipalities and school boards. This tracker only monitors legislation which directly names the LGBTQ+ community or pieces of legislation directly relevant to our community that Fair Wisconsin has taken an official stance on.

Bill Numbers
The letters in front of the bill number refer to the legislative chamber the bill originated in:

AB = Assembly Bill
SB = Senate Bill
AJR = Assembly Joint Resolution
SJR = Senate Joint Resolution
LRB = Legislative Reference Bureau (a bill before it has been assigned a number by leadership)

Statuses
A bill's status shows how far along it is on the path to becoming a law:

  1. No Action Yet: No action has been taken as of yet.
  2. Introduced: The bill has been written, filed, and assigned a number.
  3. Advancing: The bill may be debated and may ultimately be voted on in state legislative chambers.
  4. In Committee: The bill has been assigned to a committee and is awaiting a hearing or has
  5. Awaiting Action: If both the state House and Senate vote to pass the same language, the bill goes to the governor and if the governor signs it, it becomes law. If a bill is vetoed by the governor, the legislature may still vote to override that veto, in which case the bill would become law.
  6. Defeated: This bill did not receive enough votes on the floor or in committee, or has been withdrawn
  7. Vetoed: The bill has been vetoed by the governor, didn't get enough votes, or is withdrawn.
  8. Passed: This bill has successfully passed though the entire legislative process and has been signed into law by the Governor
