The election is over. Our work continues.
Abigail Swetz, Executive Director of Fair Wisconsin, Wisconsin’s only statewide LGBTQ+ civil rights and political advocacy organization, issued the following statement regarding the outcome of the 2024 presidential election:
“The election is over, and the work of advancing, achieving, and protecting equality and liberation for our LGBTQ+ community continues. It will be difficult work, but it is work we are ready for. We’ve got this, because we’ve got us. As a community, we have always shown up for each other. That is now more important than ever.
In 2016, I was a middle school teacher and Gender and Sexuality Alliance advisor. As I walked into the school building the morning after the election, a student who I did not know very well called out to me. He said, ‘Ms. Swetz – are you going to stay?’ He was asking if I was going to stay in the country. I answered ‘yes.’ And then I added, ‘because we have work to do.’
On that morning eight years ago, I meant that the future of our country was up to us now. It is today, too. And thank goodness for that. Because we have each other. And because we can, and we will, do the work.”
